The native tribes of NZ (Aotearoa) have used the manuka and kanuka tea tree as a source of therapeutic remedies, i.e. "rongoa" (medicine).
Sadly, the arrival of the colonial era saw 1,000 years of tribal hegemony of 26M hectares of land reduce to circa 1.4M in less than 100 years. Yet, incongruously today over 85% of the country's tea tree comes from these remaining tribal owned / controlled lands. In a small way, the interfacing of Station-1 with tribal landowners will help overcome the fact that current NZ law mitigates against Maori being able to use their land to secure capital.
Included in each sanctuary investment package, there is an amortizable capital contribution to support the development of NZ mānuka and kānuka agribiz by tribal landowners on their lands, enabling them to become long term Grower-Producer suppliers to the "Tribal" ecosystem.
This initiative is in keeping with the NZ Reserve Bank's objective of increasing Māori access to capital to develop sustainable rural family business ventures on an intergenerational basis.
Something that most of the newbies in New Zealand's nascent tea tree agribiz sector haven't.
Like the Martin Place/Pitt St farmers of the '80's in Australia, NZ's Queen Street farmers are inflicting the same festering wounds on 1,000+ years of history.
